The best way to lose weight—make small changes

If you’ve been on the diet roller coaster ride, you know any weight you lose quickly with crash diets, powders and potions will come back with a vengeance when you return to normal eating. That’s how the body works. With crazy diets, you lose water weight and lower your metabolism.

The secret to weight loss, that the diet industry doesn’t want you to know, is that there is no big secret. Successful weight loss is about balance, variety and moderation. Set realistic goals and make small changes. Any diet that eliminates food groups such as the high protein diet is unbalanced, unhealthy and not a long term solution. And why would you need expensive concoctions to be healthy? Save your money!

You can lose weight safely and naturally. Find a way to cut back 500 calories per day and you will lose one pound per week. One pound equals 3500 calories—and this is the reason it makes absolutely no sense when you hear claims that you will “Lose ten pounds in a week” and other nonsense.

Losing one pound per week may not seem like much especially if you have, say, twenty or more pounds to lose. But one pound per week is reasonable and safe and you won’t deprive yourself of foods you love. Think of the tortoise and the hare story.

Here are some simple ways to cut back calories:

•    Put a thinner spread of butter on your bread and save 100 calories per tablespoon.
•    Use tomato based sauces instead of heavy cream and cheese sauces.
•    Snack on fruit instead of a chocolate bar for 200 calories.
•    Munch on dry cereal or fruit instead of potato chips and cookies.
•    Try herbal teas and water instead of pop for 150 calories per glass.
•    Trim excess fat from meat and remove chicken skin before cooking.
•    Use low fat cooking methods instead of frying.

Here’s the best way I know to lose weight: write down what you eat. Count the naucho chips you munch on while preparing dinner. Write down that you ate a brownie or two at the meeting today (which by the way will cancel out an hour of walking).

When you write it all down, you identify triggers such as boredom or stress that can lead to overeating. Don’t starve yourself. Eat three meals per day with two healthy snacks.  Have your treats but know when to stop. Eat more real and unprocessed foods without added salt, sugar and fat. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, lean meats and fresh fish. Eat when you are relaxed. Eat a little less than you think you need.

If you add physical activity to your day you can lose more weight. Regular physical exercise will get you in shape and give you more energy. Exercise should be fun and easily fit into your life. Be consistent so it becomes a habit and something you look forward to. Get together with a friend to stay motivated. Cardiovascular exercise such as walking, running, biking and swimming will strengthen the heart and lungs and burn about 250 calories per half hour.

Resistance exercise with weights, tubing and practicing Yoga will strengthen the joints and add muscle to your body. Muscle burns fat and makes you look lean and toned. After a couple of months and an increase of three pounds of muscle to your body, you will burn an extra 150 calories per day even at rest.

Regular exercise makes you feel good. It releases endorphins in the body that give you a good feeling. When we feel good about ourselves, it’s easier to do without that second piece of carrot cake or bowl of heavenly hash ice cream.
If you have been struggling with weight loss, get started today to make small changes in your life. And write it down. I am at a comfortable weight and I still write everything down that I eat. It’s a habit to keep me on track—not just for weight loss but to make sure I eat well.

Don’t buy into fad diets and gimmicks like potions and concoctions that promise miracles. You don’t need that crap to be healthy, fit and happy. Save your money.

Be positive. Believe in yourself. Eat healthy real foods. Write it down (did I say that already?). Start today.
Be well.

My oatmeal and egg white frittata in Hollywood

Did you ever eat a meal that had an unusual impression on you? I mean you just absolutely loved it and from then on you never forgot the first time you had it?
This has happened to me twice in my life.

The first time was in Florida when I had an arugula salad with walnuts. It was over 15 years ago and I’d never heard of such a thing as arugula. I could not stop talking about this fabulous arugula salad. Since then, I’ve had many arugula salads although you never forget the first time…

The second time I was blown away by a meal was recently on a trip to Los Angeles, California. I should say, I am not a world traveler by any means. And why my two meals to remember were both on trips, I don’t know. My most recent adventure was after my husband surprised me on the eve of my 50th birthday. (Yikes – still not used to saying that number!) I opened my birthday card and there was a print-out for a ticket to L.A. Our daughter was visiting there so it was a wonderful surprise.

We ate our first breakfast in L.A. at Hugo’s Restaurant in West Hollywood.
And that’s where I had what turned out to be the second amazing meal. It was an oatmeal frittata. It’s kind of a cross between a pancake and an omelet. It’s got this amazing firm texture. Beautiful. We went back a second time during our stay so I could enjoy it again.

This is what it says on Hugo’s menu:
“Oatmeal Frittata: Organic steel cut oats, kamut flakes and rye flakes with almonds, folded into an egg white frittata, and garnished with cottage cheese, strawberries and apple sauce.”

Today I made an oatmeal frittata for myself and I must say it turned out pretty well. I searched the internet looking for recipes and most of them were pretty general. Here’s what I did without a recipe:

Stirred egg whites in with oatmeal and kamut flakes, added a dash of cinnamon, and sea salt and cooked it in a cast iron pan. When it was fairly set, I turned the edges in and flipped it over. I cut a piece and ate it with a tablespoon of cottage cheese and a few thawed cherries. This, along with strong coffee set me up for a great day! And there’s enough left over for tomorrow.
The simple pleasures of life…

Goodbye for now, sweet beautiful Molly Sunshine…

Molly Sunshine

If you’ve been following my blog, you know I talk a lot about my two 11 year-old Siberian Huskies, Max and Molly. I’m sad to say our beautiful Molly Sunshine died March 16. She had been sick for a couple of weeks but then seemed to be getting better. She passed away in her sleep with Max by her side and he whined all day after she was gone. It was a sad day and it’s all hard to believe.

I remember when we brought the two little Siberian Huskies into our home when they were just puppies.

Max and Molly at two months old

We brought Molly home first. Allie and I went to the dog breeder and there was Molly sitting near the back of the kennel like a little princess. We couldn’t resist—we had to bring this little beauty home. And she then claimed her territory. She would be the boss of whatever came next. We picked up Max two days later from another litter. He looked like a little piglet. He pooped and peed and puked in the truck. He whimpered and whined and waited for Molly to accept him. On their second night with us, Molly was whimpering in her huge crate. I took a chance and put Max in with her. She stopped whining and snuggled up to Max. They went to sleep comforted by each other.

Molly loved the snow

They were rarely more than ten feet apart. Where one went, the other followed—neither one wanted to miss out on anything the other one might happen to get. They played in the snow together in winter and they swam in the lake in summer. They traveled by plane together from the east coast to the west coast and back again.

Over the years, they had their battles. They’d scrap over a bone and next thing you knew, we were taking Max to the vet with a bloody ear or eye. But then what relationship is without its ups and downs?

They had their own way of communicating with each other. Somehow Max knew when Molly had to go out. He would come upstairs. Peter would take them out and Molly would be the one to poop.

Molly was boss and Max didn't mind a bit

One day they got loose and disappeared. Trudging up through the woods calling for them, I saw Max running toward me. When he saw me he stopped and then turned and headed in the other direction. He led me right to Molly who had gotten tied up around a tree. Max was Molly’s hero that day.

Now poor Maxwell Smart seems lost. What will life be like without his bossy sidekick? He’s getting extra love and attention from us, a bit of moose meat in his food to encourage him to eat. Yesterday I gave him a new beef bone to chew on. I guess it will just take time.

They cuddled together as young puppies in one crate but how this picture came about I don't know!

Molly had a special place in my heart…she was a sweet and sassy little bitch.
We will miss our beautiful little Molly Sunshine. xox

My snow-covered garden and I’m ready for Spring

My garden is under there somewhere. Where are the crocuses? I'm ready for Spring.

The side garden covered with snow, waiting for me.

Max and Molly want to come in the house. They're such homebodies.

Did Yoga Help New York Giants win the Superbowl?

What do the New York Giants and Madonna have in common?

That is besides being watched by 111 million viewers last night…and both being winners in their field…

YOGA!

The New York Giants practice Yoga.

According to the New York Post on Saturday, February 4, their Yoga teacher, Gwen Lawrence, has been keeping the players in shape with regular Yoga practice since 2004. “Lawrence’ Yoga classes are mandatory for the Giants rookies and optional for the vets, though many of them go regularly, including Eli Manning…” the Post states.

“It’s a very demanding form of exercise that includes balance, strength, flexibility, mental toughness, focus, and proper breathing,” Lawrence is quoted as saying in the article. “Pro athletes of all types see that it will improve their health and longevity on the field of play.”

Madonna was an Astanga Yoga devotee for many years. This is a Yoga practice that is very physical and intense. Madonna is 53 years old and appears to be in fantastic shape. Here are some pictures of Madonna’s Superbowl half-time show in case you missed it.

Read more about the top New York Giants players’ favorite Yoga poses.

Here’s a video from 2009 showing some Giants practicing Yoga.

Read about Gwen Lawrence’ approach to teaching Yoga to football players and “regular people.”

Just another reason to try Yoga!

Namaste,
Chrissy
