My Father Would Have Loved Facebook

My dear wonderful father passed away nine years ago today of cancer. My father touched many lives during his 66 years on earth. Anyone who knew him probably at some time or another got a card from him.

One of my favourite childhood memories is going fishing with my Dad. I'm on the left (in the bikini!); my sister Patricia is on the right

At my father’s funeral, the Pastor asked who had ever received a card, note or phone call from Ron and hundreds of hands went up.

My father kept a box of cards, envelopes and stamps on his desk within easy reach. In between phone calls, he’d open his desk drawer and choose a photocopied cartoon, Bible verse, bookmark or inspirational quote to insert into a card. It was always someone’s birthday or anniversary coming up.

Being in the life insurance business, he was trained early on to remember special occasions for clients and friends. I don’t think a day went by that he didn’t send a card to someone. He even kept a couple of blank cards in the car in case he was out and met someone who was having a birthday that day.

When my father was in the hospital, he pulled a blank birthday card out of his Bible, signed it and gave it to a nurse when he found out it was her birthday.

My father knew how to make you feel special.

My father told me this note got him the job he loved

When I was eight years old, my father applied to be a life insurance agent with Manulife after working at CN Railway telegraph office for 19 years. I wrote a note and gave it to him on the day of his interview. My father went to the interview and showed his future boss the letter I wrote. For the next thirty-two years, my father kept the letter on his desk and would often give me a hug and tell me that little letter got him the job.

Wouldn’t my father love Facebook! He’d be posting pictures and sending notes to everyone he knew.

I guess when we lose someone we love, all we can do is remember how a person has touched our lives and be thankful that we had them for as long as we did.

“Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart.” Psalm 27:14

Chrissy, how sweet and heart-rending. I adore your letter. Your father sounds like he was a very special man. The anniversary of the passing of my own father in 1989 is coming up next month. I believe our loved ones never leave us. Cheers, Violet.

  3. Thank you Chrissy for this lovely note. I am sure Ron would have loved Facebook; he would be sending little notes all the time to the hundreds of friends he would have on Facebook. Your dad was a wonderful brother to me. Uncle Walter
